Dartmoor: Sharpitor and Leather Tor (taking in the views on a misty day)

Leather Tor with Sharpitor behind

The day before my 15th birthday and I wanted a shortish walk, taking in a new area previously unexplored. Time to visit the imposing Leather Tor, and other nearby rocks. It was also my first time carrying the 75 litre rucksack, to train for Ten Tors and it sure hurt! Handy that these tors are easy to access from nearby car parks just in case something goes wrong, I'm so pessimistic.

First up, Sharpitor (Walkhampton Common). Well known, and a beautiful messy tor, it has stupendous views 360 degrees. I warmed to this tor and is so easy to access for little effort by the Princetown to Yelverton Road.

Soon after we were facing the huge and intimidating dorsal fin of Leather Tor. Extremely striking and one where you have to be careful summiting. I sure hate heights, so this one made me shake a tad!

The lesser-known tor of Lower Leather Tor was obvious some 60 metres below so we made for it. This tor must suffer from being dismissed due to its proximity to Leather Tor that dominates this area. Sometimes confused, but rarely, with Lowery Tor - Lower Leather Tor is a very good tor!

To end, a very simple ascent up and around Peek Hill to the car park.
